Fassamano French Tortoise antique Eyeglasses second half 19th Century

About the Item

Fassamano (from the French face-a-main) eyeglasses with handle that turns into a case shaped like the lenses; dark tortoise eyeglasses, oval lenses that when not used fall back inside the handle. French manufacture of the second half of the 19th century. The glasses can be folded and inserted in the center of the handle which, being long, can contain the glasses that are complete with lenses. This type of eyeglasses were used from the mid-1800s until about 1920. Glasses width 11 cm, height 4 cm, handle length 18.5 cm, thickness 1 cm.
