1929 Washington Senators Baseball Team Autographed Collage

About the Item

This is an impressive collection of team signatures from the 1929 Washington Senators baseball team. This one-of-a-kind, celebratory collage, features eighteen signatures, signed in ink on the verso of a commemorative Second Anniversary cover of Lindbergh's New York to Paris flight. The Washington Senators baseball team was one of the American League’s eight charter franchises. The 1929 Washington Senators played 152 games during the regular season, won 71 games, lost 81 games, and finished in fifth position. They played their home games at Griffith Stadium, and finished the season with a .467 winning percentage. The commemorative cover verso is signed at top by Walter Johnson, "Barney," "The Big Train," one of the most celebrated and dominating players in history. Johnson was one of the "Immortal Five," one of the first five players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. Johnson signed this cover while manager of the Senators team, a position he held from 1929 to 1932. Also included are signatures of three other Hall of Famers, Joe Cronin, Goose Goslin, and Sam Rice. The cover is further signed by fellow teammates Garland Braxton, Lloyd Brown, Bump Hadley, Sam Jones, Firpo Marberry (signed Fred Marberry), Muddy Ruel, Benny Tate, Ossie Bluege, Jack Hayes, Joe Judge, Red Barnes, Archie Campbell (signed as A.S. Campbell), Roy Spencer, and Sam West. The collage is completed with five black and white photographs, four of which are portrait or action shots of the Hall of Famers Walter Johnson, Joe Cronin, Goose Goslin, and Sam Rice. Beneath the signed cover is a team photograph of the 1929 Washington Senators. Condition: The cover has overall even toning, and has thin loss to left bottom edge, as would be consistent with age and use. The eighteen signatures are bold and very legible. Walter Johnson's is the only signature in black fountain pen ink. The collage is uniquely framed to the highest archival standards. The autographed cover is archivally mounted floating on dark grey acid-free mat, internal framed by a dark silver spandrel. The five photographs and descriptive plaque are floating on a black ground, and the whole collage is housed in a custom-built black and silver frame. Framed dimension: 29” H x 17 1/2" W x 1 1/8" D.
