About the Item
The w o o d p o p pintail longboards are handcrafted in workshops on either side of the Welsh/English border the UK. Each one is made from best quality Finnish Birch and vacuum laminated to form a concave deck featuring a unique marquetry inlay design. The marquetry on this skateboard incorporates a combination of dyed wood veneers including Swiss Pear, Sycamore, Indian Rosewood and Fumed Figured Eucalyptus amongst others. It also comes complete with Mindless Talisman trucks and wheels, stainless bolts and cork shock-pads - so it's ready to be taken out on the road - if you can bear to take it off the wall.

Emma Wood founded the w o o d p o p studio in Wales' Black Mountains which specialises in marquetry and inlay work. Since it's inception 10 years ago, the studio has gained a reputation for pairing the classic art-form of marquetry with contemporary subject matter and its application on to non-traditional surfaces. The studio prides itself on constantly challenging the limits of where and how marquetry can be applied and to that end they are the first designers to have ever successfully applied a full-scale marquetry artwork to fully-functioning wooden surfboards. In addition to this latest series of surfboards, w o o d p o p also creates bespoke wall art, custom furniture and site specific commissions.

Mid-1990s Velzy balsawood longboard shaped by the late Dale Velzy (1927-2005). Features a 5-stringer design with gorgeous wood fin and tail-block. A superb example of Dale Velzy shaped balsa surfboard and beautiful functional art piece.
Velzy is credited with conceptualizing many of the promotional techniques now considered a standard in the surfing world. This includes being the very first surfboard maker to form a surfing team, a practice which would became very popular in the future. Dale ‘Hawk’ Velzy made numerous contributions to the world of surfing and as a result was one of the first individuals to be inducted into the Hermosa Beach Surfers Walk of Fame in 2003, two years before passing away.
Velzy began shaping surfboards in the 1940's in Manhattan Beach, California. Board of the day were hard to ride and transport due to the size and weight. Velzy saw this as an opportunity and started to shape surfboards using lightweight balsawood which made the boards easier to ride and transport. He soon outgrew his first board shop in Manhattan Beach which was opened in 1950, this shop would later be credited as the first commercial surfboard factory.
Velzy later formed a partnership with the legendary board maker Hap Jacobs...
