About the Item

This is a rare early edition, 7'9" big wave gun Lightning Bolt, in all original condition. Made and signed, "Aloha, Gerry Lopez", authenticating it as an original Lightning Bolt made under the Gerry Lopez label. This example would enhance ANY collection it stands alone as a true example of 1970s Big Wave Guns. During the short board revolution 7'9" was long, indicating that this board would have been made for use in powerful North Shore of Oahu surf (and was most likely used at Sunset and Big Wiamea waves). It is a round-pintail work of art, contrasting red and yellow panels with black pin striping and double lightning bolts are each inscribed with "a pure source" in the pin-striping around the bolt. The pin-striping and writing was done by Danny Brawner. Glassed-in wooden fin has contrasting fiberglass of neutral and yellowish-green (as shown in photo). The bottom is off-white/cream with the original Gerry Lopez Lightning Bolt logo towards the nose. This board is in amazing condition with minimal ding repair and light pressure indentations on the deck, all giving evidence to the fact that it was used and lovingly cared for. Lightning Bolt Surfboards was founded by Gerry Lopez and Jack Shipley in 1972 in Honolulu Hawaii. Gerry was the undisputed king of Pipeline, the fastest shallowest wave on the North Shore. He rode it with such proficiency he made riding it look easy. This most fluid and poised surfer of the time, had a relaxed style that belied the danger of his beloved Pipeline, where one mistake could send you into the razor sharp coral lying only a few feet below. This board - this bolt was his symbol. Measurements: Width: 19.25", Height: 93", Depth of board at fin is 8".
