Fine Victorian Walking Stick; Bone Carved Dog Head Handle; Cherrywood Circa 1880

About the Item

Fine quality cherry wood 19th century rare bone carved dog head handle walking stick from the fabulous collection of Prince Moritz (1926-2013) who was well known for his extensive collection of art and antiques on behalf of The Foundation of The House of Hess. Fabulous handle subject matter of a carved hunting dog in fine realistic detail with floppy long ears and fine ebony accents to facial features; hair, nostrils, and jowls. Note the fine quality life-like yellowish glass eyes. Mounted below the dog is the sound and strong round carved cherry wood shaft, ending in a bold long carved 2 1/8" long bone tip, completely original and firmly intact (often these are missing, replaced or repaired). The walking stick is all original in every aspect with no repairs or restoration of any kind; the shaft maintains a nice patina and color, while the detail to the dog handle has evidence of crazing, attesting to its 150 year old genesis----great original surface and patina. Simply a wonderful and beautiful cane and a nice addition to a fine collection of antique walking sticks, especially given the Prince Moritz provenance. I have left the descriptive and identifying label on the tip of the cane for posterity. It is difficult to discern the genesis of this Circa 1880 walking stick but it is probably American or English. Fine Quality Antique French Toy "Dancing Couple", circa 1880, Rare

Located in Incline Village, NV

One of a kind, fine quality antique toy, "Dancing Couples" is of French manufacture, it is marked in raised lettering "A.L. Paris" at the top of the base. It is also very similar to several French toys noted in "Antique Toys" by Jeffrey Levitt, and the young lady's face is almost identical to the bisque face on a French toy referenced on page 209 plate #372. This outstanding toy consists of two figures, a young man resembling Napoleon Bonaparte, and a young lady, dressed in period clothes with bisque (porcelain) faces and heads and wooden legs. The base is some type of metal composite consisting of a cast lead alloy. The polychromed hand painted blue and red metal dance floor is also a lead alloy. The wire stands supporting the figures is of ferrous metal. The bisque faces are very lifelike with flesh tones and blue eyes, rosy cheeks to the lady with bisque auburn hair. He is dressed in original period Napoleon type military clothes...

Very attractive and well-made decorative and colorful Staffordshire porcelain money box or savings bank; made in England, indicative of the style potters from that region employed, circa 1880. Nicely detailed with green floral facie, orange double pane windows and front door, and a white painted cottage with brown steps and green fauna at entry. There were no "coin traps" or provisions for coin removal so banks such as these are rare since smashing or breaking the bank was the only method by which the money could be retrieved. The bank is in very good all original condition with only a minor "hairline" repair to one of the chimney stacks (see image). It is very sound and done a long time ago and is hardly noticeable. Being a cross collectible, this would be a very unique addition for a Staffordshire collector indeed (the subject being a money box), or a welcome compliment to any still bank...
