About the Item
Two Book Volumes Of 'British Freshwater Fishes' By The Rev. W. Houghton.
First edition (1879) fishing book, bevelled edge hard bound copies of 'British Freshwater Fishes' by The Rev. W. Houghton. M.A., F.L.S. The two volumes are covered in pebbled faux-red leather cloth with gilt title on front and spine, also having gilt pictorial vignettes of an angler wearing waders in the river holding a fish on the covers, with black pictorial decorations to the corners of a geometric image of three-fish-one-head. These fishing books were illustrated by A.F. Lydon and published by 'London: William Mackenzie, 69, Ludgate Hill E.C. Edinburgh and Dublin'. The forty colour chromolithographic plates (with tissue guards) depict fish either in or by their natural habitat, also there are many engraved views of regions where the fish are found, with extensive text discussing the characteristics of the species and their habitats, approximately 100 pages per book.

A large late Victorian first edition veterinarian book "Modern Practical Farriery, A Complete System Of The veterinary Art" edited by W.J. Miles and published by William Mackenzie, 69 Ludgate Hill, London. A very rare, sought after and important publication illustrated with numerous finely executed anatomical and other engravings, possessing high value on the score of utility as well as of ornament, many of which are executed in colour. Not ex-library. Well over five hundred pages, 47 full-page-plates in black and white and colour (all original lithographs and colourful chromolithograph plates) also several illustrations within the text. Large format hardback book, leather corners and spine, gilt title to spine 'Modern Farriery', all page edges marbled. Internally it is very clean and bright, cover rather worn, cloth cover to the rear with tear.
