About the Item

This is a rare 1976 Lightning Bolt Surfboard made by legendary shaper Terry Martin. Fully restored and measuring in at 6’9” this beautifully rounded swallow pintail board is a real eye-catcher. The bottom is as is exciting as the deck with color and verve - making this a board that would look amazing centrally located, allowing viewing from all angles. Vibrant colors graduate from brilliant white through cream to orange rails. Lightning bolts, logos and signatures capture the eye and the imagination. The "Gerry Lopez" signature authenticates this as an original Lightning Bolt made under the Gerry Lopez label. The tiny “TM” positioned right at the tip of the large Lightning Bolt logo tells us that this is a Terry Martin shaped board; he has also handwritten "a pure source" within the bolt shadow. This board is in restored condition, on the bottom there is an area where the pigment appears to have run, possibly through a chemical reaction, causing a bit of texturizing to have occurred. In our opinion this does not detract from the sheer work of art that this board is. Lightning Bolt Surfboards was founded by Gerry Lopez and Jack Shipley in 1972 in Honolulu Hawaii. Gerry was the undisputed king of Pipeline, the fastest shallowest wave on the North Shore. He rode it with such proficiency he made riding it look easy. This most fluid and poised surfer of the time, had a relaxed style that belied the danger of his beloved Pipeline, where one mistake could send you into the razor sharp coral lying only a few feet below. This board - this bolt was his symbol. During the 1970s Lightning Bolt was by far the most desired and enigmatic surfboard label anywhere on the planet. At the time Gerry Lopez and the Lightning Bolt Team Riders charged waves at Pipeline, Waimea, and around the world. Every magazine had ads and editorial photos showing “The Bolt” and Lightning Bolt Surfboards were made under license world-wide. In the 1970s Danny Brawner held the mainland license for Lightning Bolt Surfboards. The boards were shaped in the Hobie San Diego factory by no other than Mickey Munoz and Terry Martin. It’s wonderful and unique that this board has the “TM” written on it. Terry Martin shaped boards since age 14. He started working with Hobie Alter in Dana Point in the 1960s. At his own reckoning he shaped over 75,000 surfboards. He passed in 2012, yet he is still considered one of the most respected shapers in the Surf Industry.
