About the Item

This rare pair of Paipo Surfboards were made circa 1920. They were precursors to the belly board and were also known as "hotel boards" because they were loaned by the hotels to their guests for personal use and for surf lessons with the Waikiki Beach Boys. The moderate size of these boards allowed for easy play in the water, made it easy for the tourists to purchase one and transport it back to the mainland and today allows for easy decorative installation. Warm wood in alternating grains and tones accents the clean, streamline shapes. These boards show their age and use yet retain their glory as well as significant portions of their original decals bearing the Hawaiian crest and the words UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO, roughly translated as "The Life Of The Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness." The General Veneer Company in South Gate (a suburb of Los Angeles) California manufactured the boards with the cut-out handles and Pacific System Homes manufactured the one with the center stringer. Both boards were made during the 1920s and 30s for the Royal Hawaiian and Moana Hotels. A few guests brought these boards back to the mainland as a lifetime memory of their trip to the then very distant shores of Hawaii, very few have survived in this condition. Dimensions: General Veneer Company with handles: 60" L x 18.25" W x 1.5" D. Pacific Systems Homes with stringer: 58" L x 17.75" W x 1.5" D. A little more background on Pacific System Holmes: Founded in 1908, The Los Angeles based Pacific Ready Cut Homes was the worlds largest maker of kit houses with a 24 acre wood milling site on South Boyle Avenue. As a result of the Stock Market Crash, the advent of the Great Depression and the decline of the kit housing business the founder's son Myers Butte returned to LA from his studies at Stanford and introduced the manufacturing of wooden surfboards to his father's business. The company changed its name to Pacific System Holmes and became a leading manufacture in wooden surfboard production.
