Georgian Oval Silver Mounted Brass Pocket Snuff Box

About the Item

A finely made English Georgian silver mounted oval shaped pocket snuff box dating from the early 19th century. The snuff box is of oval shape curved upwards at either end probably to make it easier to disguise when carried in a pocket. Our research found similar examples in museum collections dating from around 1810. The box made of thick gauge brass has a silver mounted lip to the cover with a full width hinge the hinge connecting elements also in silver. This well engineered box is pewter lined and is not marked. In overall good condition with a few minor dents and wear associated with age and use. Provenance: From a wonderful and choice collection of small cabinet pieces many of which we are currently offering on 1stdibs. Acquired in the UK Art Market.
