Antique Belgian Silver and Enamel Vesta Box, circa 1868
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare antique Belgian silver and enamel vesta box; an addition to our continental silver case collection.
This fine antique Belgian 900 standard silver vesta box has a rounded serpentine shaped form.
This box retains the original sprung hinged cover ornamented with an impressive and rare, original painted enamel panel depicting a French/European style roulette table* with a lucky charm motif to each corner: 13, a four-leaf clover, a ladybird and a pig**.
The undulating sides of the box are embellished with an engraved geometric lozenge design incorporating quatrefoil motifs to the centre of each and trefoil ornamentations to the pin struck border.
The anterior side of the box features a serrated panel/match striker.
This vesta box retains the original gilt interior.
* This roulette table has a subtly different layout to the North American style and bears the French terminology for Even (Pair), Odd (Impair), Low Bet (Manque) and High Bet (Passe).
** The icon of a pig representing luck originated in the Middle Ages; if you possessed plenty of pigs it was seen as a sign of prosperity and wealth.
