Clarabell and Emmet Kelly Bronze Bookends, PM Craftsman 1970s

About the Item

The set features two bookends shaped like clowns, with the character Clarabell and Emmet Kelly. The bookends have beautiful, age-appropriate patina; they are marked with manufacturer's stickers PM Craftsman, Eaton Park, Florida, on the felt bottoms. While the molds for the bookends were designed in 1960s, the stickers indicate that the pieces were made in 1970s, after the company moved to their new location. The bookends were made by PM Craftsman, an American firm based in Lakeland, Florida; it was founded in 1911, and in the 1950s, PM Craftsman began making cast bookends using molds they designed and acquired from other companies. In the 1970s, PM Craftsman moved from Philadelphia to Lakeland, Florida, where it still operates today.

Vintage Pair of Brass Pineapple Bookends
By Maison Jansen
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage heavy solid brass pair of pineapple bookends feature textured, detailed bodies, mounted on rounded base, and sculptural three-tier tops. The pieces are heavy enough to be used as doorstops. As early as in the 18th century, the pineapple was established as a symbol of hospitality, with its prickly, tufted shape incorporated in gateposts, door entryways, and finials, as well as in silverware and ceramics. The style and interpretation of the fruit changed with time, following cultural, architectural, and art shifts in our society. This pair is sculpted in more contemporary, Mid Century Modern style with strong Hollywood Regency influence, that is reminiscent of Maison Jansen pineapple lamps...
