Jennings Brothers Pair of Bronze Elephant Bookends

About the Item

Rare pair of bronze elephant bookends was manufactured by Jennings Brothers in 1920s-1930s. Both pieces have retained their beautiful patina and the original felt bottoms. Each piece is marked JB on the bottom under the felt. Jennings Brothers, also known as JB, was founded in 1891 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and operated until early 1950s. The company maintained a staff of artists and sculptors and produced some of the finely crafted art metal pieces made during this Arts and Crafts time period. In the 1920s, Jennings Brothers added a line of high-quality bookends to their manufacturing operations. In 1920s-1930s their creations included high grade bookends, candlesticks, jewelry boxes, lamps and figurative items. The company was employing production methods and meticulous techniques that did not lend themselves well to mass production, which was an economic burden; by the early 1940s, Jennings Brother changed their manufacturing operations to focus on the war effort. Their pieces were always signed with the initials "JB", and even though many pieces were designed and done by artists, most are not directly artist signed.
