About the Item

French Art Deco Carved Solid Ebony Bookends African Heads on Base 1920s These breathtaking objects are heavy in their execution and are extremely finely crafted. The solid ebony wood with its natural grain emphasizes the character of the letters. The even faces with pierced earlobes have an enormous headdress that looks like a turban pulled back with an open end like an ostrich wheel. The entire headdress is designed with linear indentations and the end has small spikes all the way around. The back is completely designed with small indentations. The base is stepped and has a circumferential carved geometric band on the upper edge of both heels. The heads and the base are kept smooth and simple, the focus is on the grandiose headgear which creates absolute eye-catchers thanks to the exaggerated length. The objects are solid and heavy - the surface has been newly waxed.
