About the Item

Celestial globe on the cartouche reads Columbus - Himmelglobus bearbeit von Porf. Dr Johannes Riem ausgefuhrt von Kartograph C. Luther Columbus - Verlag G.m.b.H. (Paul Oestergaard) Berlin Lichterfelde. From the 1930s. Turned wooden base with papier-mâché compass and sphere complete with engraved brass meridian circle. Height cm 64- inches 25.2, sphere diameter cm 33- inches 13. Founded in 1909 in Berlin by Paul Oestergaard, grandson of Peter J. Oestergaard, who manufactured globes in the late 1800s, Columbus is the oldest globe manufacturer still working in the world today. During more than a century, Columbus has been innovating the globe manufacturing industry, and the experience accumulated over 4 generations has enabled Columbus to achieve the status of the world's leading globe manufacturer. Peter J. Oestergaard began its production in the late 1800s. After producing earth models for the Berlin Newspaper Allgemeine Zeitung for a few years, he soon became known for his stunningly detailed globes. He then decided to open his own globe store; Peter Oesteergard was succeeded by his son Peter Oestergaard Jr. who renamed the firm Drei Kegel Verlag; the firm ceased operations during World War II due to the untimely death of Peter Oesterggard Jr. Instead, Peter Oesterggard's grandson, Paul Oestergaard, would open the famous Columbus Verlag, which still exists today. A celestial globe is usually housed in a structure consisting of a first ring representing the observer's horizon and a second ring representing the meridian of the place where the observation is being made; the other fundamental circles of the celestial sphere (equator, tropics, etc.) are then drawn on the surface of the globe. The celestial globes bear on their surface the stars identified in the second century CE by Claudius Ptolemy, who catalogued them in his work "Almagest" (where he also illustrated how to construct a copper celestial globe with reference circles to locate the stars that were listed in the catalog), and these stars are then surrounded by the drawing of the constellations that contain them. Much attention should be paid to the fact that the constellations are not depicted as seen by looking at the sky, but in a mirror-image fashion, that is, as if looking at the sphere from the outside.Probably the first to construct this type of globe were the Chaldeans and the Egyptians, but tradition usually attributed the construction of the first celestial globes to Anaximander and Thales of Miletus. One of the earliest depictions of a celestial sphere dates back to the second century AD: this is the so-called Farnese Atlas, now in the Archaeological Museum in Naples, a Roman reproduction of a Hellenistic statue depicting Atlas holding a celestial globe, on which are carved 48 constellations and the major celestial circles.
