About the Item

At the end of 17th century, Venitian monk, Vicenzo Coronelli, a cartographer produced the largest pair of globes ever made for King Louis XIV: 13 foot in diameter. As a publicity stunt, on the celestial globes, stars were placed in the position they were on Louis XIV's birth. He then by a method of subscription went on to make globes 43 inches in diameter. These were the largest globes available at the time. The gores for the terrestrial globes were printed in Venice and the ones for the terrestrial in Paris. Coronelli would sell completely finished globes or printed gores that were turned into globes by artisans wherever the globes were to be displayed. circa 1975, architect Fernand Pouillon a collector of old prints and rare books bought a book of original and unused gores. He started a publishing company in Paris , Le Jardin de Flore, which purpose was to republish rare and beautiful prints. In the early 1980s he organized the production of the 43 inches globes. The spheres were in fiberglass, the gores were printed on handmade paper from Moulins Richard de Bas in Auvergne by Mourlot a company that printed among others engravings for Picasso. Fernand Pouillon also produced a contemporary terrestrial globe which was President François Mitterrand's favorite gift to heads of States. After Fernand Pouillon’s death his daughter Catherine Pouillon took over the Jardin de Flore place des Vosges in Paris. She continued the production of the Coronelli globes. Disliking the fiberglass sphere she developed a papier mache sphere which is how ancient spheres where produced, and applied the Mourlot gores on top. For this pair the design of the base is modeled after the globe in Bibliothèque Sainte Geneviève, Paris and is hand carved. The gores were colored once applied on the spheres.
