Globo terrestre da tavolo realizzato dal geografo e cartografo dell’ Impero Austro-Ungarico Jan Felkl nella seconda metà del XIX secolo. Oltre alla mappa territoriale sono riportate le correnti oceaniche. Base in legno tornito ed ebanizzata sfera in carta pesta e gesso rivestita dei fusi e delle calotte da stampa litografica. Buono stato, pulitura e restauro conservativo. Misure cm 30x60 – 12x23.6 inches.
Fino agli inizi del Novecento le sfere per i globi venivano prodotte come alle origini: due semisfere di cartapesta pressate e modellate sopra o dentro uno stampo emisferico, essiccate e rafforzate all’interno con un’asse di legno, quindi incollate e ricoperte di uno strato sottile di gesso, su questo supporto venivano incollati i fusi del globo di zone comprese tra due meridiani, generalmente dodici in carta precedentemente stampata da incisione su lastra di rame e colorati, ciascuno dei quali coprente 30 gradi di longitudine. Da sempre l’uomo ha desiderato conoscere il mondo in cui vive e ha utilizzato tutti i mezzi a disposizione per misurare lo spazio che lo circonda per ampliare sempre più le proprie conoscenze. Le condizioni che permisero all’uomo di elaborare modelli del mondo e dello spazio si realizzarono probabilmente soltanto dopo che il pensiero ebbe raggiunto uno sviluppo tale da comprendere che si poteva rappresentare attraverso un modello processi naturali. Già nell’antica Grecia i naturalisti erano arrivati a comprendere la sfericità della Terra e la sua posizione sospesa nello spazio. Il primo globo di cui si ha notizia è quello attribuito da Strabone, storico e geografo, al greco Cratete di Mallo (c.a. 150 a. C.). I primi globi agli inizi del XVI sec. furono costruiti sotto la spinta delle grandi esplorazioni geografiche ed iniziarono da subito ad essere impiegati per scopi didattici presso corti principesche, monasteri e collegi; il globo comincia in seguito a conquistare gli ambienti universitari e le scuole superiori ed inferiori.
Sarà con l’Ottocento del grande commercio, della circolazione e dell’introduzione dell’obbligo scolastico che il desiderio di conoscere paesi lontani aumenterà rendendo inadeguato il vecchio metodo di costruzione dei globi.
Fusi stampati da lastre incise non bastano più e l’unica vera risorsa diventa la litografia attraverso la quale è possibile stampare ed aggiornare tempestivamente carte che col crescere delle scoperte geografiche effettuate nei vari paesi si fanno sempre più differenti.
Jan Felkl (1817-1878) nacque in Boemia e già nel 1840 fece dei prospetti illustrati per globi in 6 misure differenti. Nel corso dei venti anni successivi, crebbe fino a diventare la più grande manifattura di globi del mercato Austro-Ungarico, producendo globi terrestri e celesti, in 17 lingue diverse, come anche globi lunari, planetari e telluri. Felkl presentò i suoi globi all’esposizione mondiale del 1867 a Parigi e nel 1873 a Vienna. I primi globi erano prodotti incidendo e colorando a mano gli spicchi. Felkl fondò il proprio Istituto Geografico e Litografico a Praga per produrre globi e mappe. Nel 1870 Felkl spostò la fabbrica da Praga a Roztok e prese suo figlio più giovane come partner nella sua azienda ribattezzata Felkl & Son, producendo globi per l’esportazione, in tutta Europa ed anche negli Stati Uniti. L’attività crebbe fino ad impiegare più di 40 persone, aprendo anche una sede a Vienna. I principali clienti erano: scuole, istituzioni pubbliche e biblioteche. Dopo la morte di Jan Felkl l’attività è stata continuata dalla famiglia fino ai primi del 1900.
