About the Item
Globo terrestre edito nella seconda metà del XIX secolo dal geografo francese Joseph Forest; oltre alla mappa territoriale sono raffigurate le correnti oceaniche e le principali rotte commerciali del periodo. Sfera in cartapesta e gesso rivestita degli spicchi di carta litografata e acquerellata, base in legno tornito ed ebanizzato, completa del semicerchio del meridiano in ottone inciso.
Buono stato pulitura e restauro conservativo. Misure cm 32x60 – 12.6x23.6.
Joseph Forest 1865-1942, geografo e cartografo francese fondò la sua casa editrice nel 1886 a Parigi in rue de Buci, realizzando globi terrestri e celesti, mappe scolastiche e sfere armillari, soprattutto per uso didattico.
Nel 1889 divenne fornitore ufficiale delle scuole da parte del Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione.
La sua variegata produzione comprendeva globi da tavolo, alcuni su basi in legno tornito ed ebanizzato, globi da terra e globi innovativi, come quelli dotati di basi rotanti meccanizzate.
Il primo globo terrestre di cui si ha notizia è quello attribuito da Strabone, storico e geografo, al greco Cratete di Mallo (c.a. 150 a.C.). I primi globi agli inizi del XVI sec. furono costruiti sotto la spinta delle grandi esplorazioni geografiche ed iniziarono da subito ad essere impiegati per scopi didattici presso corti principesche, monasteri e collegi; il globo comincia in seguito a conquistare gli ambienti universitari e le scuole superiori ed inferiori. Nel XVIII secolo, il geografo ufficiale di Luigi XV re di Francia, Didier Robert de Vaugondy, grazie alla pratica acquisita nella costruzione dei globi,
ampliò l’articolo “Globe” dell’Encyclopédie illustrando dettagliatamente la distinzione tra un globo celeste (che rappresenta la superficie concava del cielo con le sue costellazioni) e un globo terrestre (che rappresenta invece la superficie della Terra con i mari, le isole, i fiumi, le città, ecc.) e le tecniche per realizzarli: due semisfere di cartapesta pressate e modellate sopra o dentro uno stampo emisferico, essiccate e rafforzate all’interno con un’asse di legno, quindi incollate e ricoperte di uno strato sottile di gesso su cui venivano incollati i fusi del globo di zone comprese tra due meridiani, generalmente dodici, in carta precedentemente stampata da incisione su lastra di rame e colorati, ciascuno dei quali coprente 30 gradi di longitudine. Sarà con l’Ottocento del grande commercio, della circolazione e dell’introduzione dell’obbligo scolastico che il desiderio di conoscere paesi lontani aumenterà rendendo inadeguato il vecchio metodo di costruzione dei globi. Fusi stampati da lastre incise non bastano più e l’unica vera risorsa diventa la litografia attraverso la quale è possibile stampare ed aggiornare tempestivamente carte che col crescere delle scoperte geografiche effettuate nei vari paesi diventano obsolete sempre più rapidamente.
