About the Item

Rare large world traffic globe of the steamship company Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen. Between 1900 and 1918, Welt-Reise Verlag Berlin published this model, which was commissioned by the (steam)shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd. It was produced in the Berlin Cartographic Institute by Paul Oestergaard, who founded the Columbus-Verlag in 1909, the world-renowned and oldest still existing globe publisher in Germany.  Edited by Prof. Dr. Ernst Friedrich of the University and the Handelshochschule Leipzig. Cardboard ball on ebonised wooden stand with tripod on a triangular pedestal. The original lower base is missing and has been replaced by a new base board with old brass rollers, on which the original part sits loosely. So it is also possible to place only the original part without the new addition. Scale: 1: 26 600 000. The meridian ring is made of brass. Dimensions: 97 cm (without base with castors) or 105 cm high / 38.2 inch (without base with castors) or 41.3 inch high, 50 cm (globe) diameter / 19.7 diameter. The globe has clear signs of use and partly slight damages (please see pictures), but this does not diminish its decorative value. We would be happy to send additional detailed pictures. An identical piece (except for the base) is in the collection of the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography in Leipzig. Literature: Dolz, Wolfram: Die Globen des Leibniz-Instituts für Länderkunde in Leipzig, in: Der Globusfreund, Nr. 53/54, 2007, S. 114-126.
