A huge pair of 21 inches Cruchley Library Globes
By G.F. Cruchley
Located in ZWIJNDRECHT, NL
G.F. Cruchley (UK, 1796-1880)
London ca 1850
A magnificent pair of terrestrial and celestial globes. Equatorial table engraved with the signs of the zodiac and resting on 3 mahogany molded feet held by a compass at the spacer. With graduated brass meridian circles and time clocks. The terrestrial globe is inscribed in a cartouche: Cruchley's new terrestrial globe from the most recent and best authorities. Exhibiting the discoveries in equatorial Africa, north pole. And the new settlements and divisions in Australia, New Zealand, Californa, Texas, &c. London. Sold by Gould and Porter opticians 181 strand WC. The celestial globe is inscribed in a cartouche: Cruchleys new celestial globe on which is accurately laid down the whole of the stars and nebule contained in the astronomical catalogue of the Reverend Mr. Wollaston F.R.S. Also from the authorities Flamstead, De La Caille, Hevellus, Bradley, Herschel, Maskelyne, &c. Ands the limits of each constellation determined by a boundary line. London, published by G.F. Cruchley, map-seller & globe maker, 81 Fleet street.
Signed: CRUCHLEY in London England, circa 1850 H. 125 cm Diam. 53 cm (21 inches) Diam. 25 cm compasses The two spheres are in a perfect state of freshness and are perfectly legible.
The condition of both the globes is very good. There have been some professional repairs to some damaged gores. The Terrestrial globe in good conserved and legible condition, it has areas of rubbing, retouching, and slight discoloration. The Celestial globe is also in good conserved and legible condition with areas of rubbing, retouching and slight discoloration. The gores themselves have been cleaned and revarnished. The splendid mahogany legs and moulded feet are in first class condition. Each globe consists of 12 hand coloured copper engraved gores over a paper-maché hollow core, made up of two hemispheres joined at the equator and covered with a layer of plaster. There are paper horizon rings, made up of a series of concentric circles, displaying the months of the year, the signs of the zodiac and wind directions.
THE TERRESTRIAL GLOBE.
The globe provides much detailed information, and was accurate up to the date of production, which in this case is the mid-19th century. It shows the latest discoveries and developments that had taken place. It displays names and territories that were once familiar to the people of the age, 150 years into the future! In Asia for example, there are places like ‘Little Bucharia’, ‘Little and Greater Tartary’, ‘Russia in Asia.’ Undoubtedly, the continent that has changed more than any other is Africa. So many African countries that we know and recognise now, had different, perhaps more ‘Colonial’ names more than a century and a half ago. There was ‘Nubia’ (Sudan/Egypt), ‘Abbyssinia’ (Ethiopia), ‘Cape Colony’ (South Africa), ‘Dahomey’ (Benin) but to name a few. Australia was a little over 50 years away from its union via ‘Federation’ in 1901. This brought about the Commonwealth of Australia. However, in 1850 they were six separate British selfserving colonies, ruled directly from England.
In North America, both Los Angeles and San Francisco are incorporated as cities into California - as it becomes the 31st U.S. state. Much of mid-western and western USA were known as ‘The Western Territory’ & ‘The Missouri Territory’, Florida was still refered to as ‘East & West Florida’. Canada was split into ‘Canada East’ & ‘Canada West.’ Canada East was primarily (for historical reasons) French-speaking, and Canada West primarily Englishspeaking. Much of Western Canada remained unexplored and undeveloped. In Europe, there was still the ‘Russian Empire’, the ‘Ottoman Empire’, the ‘AustroHungarian Empire’, and the German ‘Prussian Empire.’
THE CELESTIAL GLOBE.
The Celestial Globe displays the stars, the constellations, clusters and nebulae in a beautiful and well thought out manner. Mythical figures and signs of the zodiac are seen. The equinoctial and solistitial colures are graduated in degrees. Although the colour is somewhat muted, it takes nothing away from the overall beauty and the undoubted aesthetic qualities of the globe.
Historically, globes are among the most ancient scientific instruments known to man. They can be dated back over two millennia, and are still manufactured to this day. The earliest tradition of globe making is mainly concerned with celestial globes – man...

Antique Gothic Fire Screen w. Handpainted Earth Angle, Saints and Carved Knights
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning firescreen with a famous earth angle, two famous saint paintings and more.
With meaningful 'religious art' from centuries-past being one of our specialities we were amazed, not only to find this rare and marvelous fire screen, but also because of its excellent condition. But then again, we think we see that more often, because true beauty, quality and meaningful antiques radiate something that was already there when it was created. This 'something' commands respect and this is why most people take very good care of very special pieces. Since much of what we know now about Christianity and about monastic life in its various 'forms' was given shape since the life of Christ, but possibly mostly so in Gothic / Medieval times, much of this is expressed in European Gothic Art of the past circa 8 centuries. This rare and beautiful fire screen from the early 1800s, which can also be used as a small room divider or a unique work of (decorative) art, is one of those unique Gothic antiques. The hand-carved knight sculptures are 'fun' and meaningful at the same time, because one of them looks a little desperate and the other looks more at piece and in prayer. The hand-carved winged angel in the middle/ on top seems to be overlooking this 'Gesamtkunstwerk'. What makes this antique really stand out and what also makes it complete are the three hand-painted panels inside this screen. Each of the figures portrayed here have dedicated their lifes to doing good, giving love and hope and thus healing people. In the centre is a glorious painting (in medieval style) of Earth Angel St. Raphael and the boy Tobias. The lady Saint on the right, we feel, is Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) and the Saint on the left, we feel, is either Francis de Sales...

Burr Walnut Brown Leather Regency Metamorphic Reading Armchair to Library Steps
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
Located in West Sussex, Pulborough
We are delighted to offer for sale this pair of large and collectable Regency style metamorphic armchair which converts into Library steps after the original 18th century design by Gillows of Lancaster with Burr Walnut panels
A very good looking and well made pair, I have never seen a Regency style piece with Burr Walnut panels before, the leather seat pads have been restored by my leather polishers, they have been hand dyed six times, antiqued and sealed
The period 1800-1825 was a great one for ‘patent’ or ‘metamorphic’ furniture This chair, which transforms into a short set of steps for use with bookshelves, is close to a design for a ‘Library Chair’ published in Rudolph Ackermann’s Repository of the Arts in July 1811, which was made by the London firm of Morgan and Saunders, of Catherine Street, Strand.
They were well known for their ingenious furniture, including reading chairs with writing surfaces attached and a great variety of travelling beds...

20thC Louis Vuitton Encyclopedia Britannica Trunk In Monogram Canvas c.1911
By Louis Vuitton
Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent
This very unusual trunk, dating from around 1911, was specially commissioned by Encyclopaedia Britannica and is associated with Cambridge. As described in 100 Legendary Trunks by Louis Vuitton, the idea was both ingenious and practical: rather than having to decide what essential reading material one might bring to a desert island, why not take the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica? Recognised as the most comprehensive and well-researched collection of knowledge, the encyclopaedia was continuously revised and updated, making it not only an indispensable source of learning but also an ideal companion for long journeys. In 1910, the publisher—linked to Cambridge University—placed an order for 1,000 trunks a full year before the eleventh edition was released. Each trunk was designed to house twenty-nine volumes, totalling roughly 28,000 pages (excluding the index) and containing 40,000 articles, all carefully edited to expand its market reach in North America.
Louis Vuitton was at the forefront of luxury trunk design during this era, and his library trunk...
