About the Item

An 18th century four-panel School of Brueghel folding screen by Zuber of Dufour. Hand paint oil on canvas on a wooden frame. The scene depicts the Fontaine des Innocents in Paris at the center of a bustling marketplace, with people going about their daily lives. Titled across the bottom "La Fontaine Des Innocents". The back is also painted, with green rosettes centered in green diamonds against cream colored panels. Designed by architect Pierre Lescot and sculpted by Jean Goujon in 1549, it is the oldest monumental fountain in Paris and was originally part of the Eglise des Saints-Innocents. Built against a wall in the Cimetière des Innocents (Cemetery of the Innocents), the fountain was moved to the center of a new square, now known as Place Joachim-du-Bellay, when the cemetery was relocated. The fountain was given a fourth side to match the existing three. The fountain's name is linked to the "Massacre of the Innocents" from the Bible and is a tribute to the children killed in Judea by King Herod. The area around the fountain was once a bustling marketplace, established after the cemetery was moved. Today, it is a popular meeting spot in the heart of Paris, surrounded by restaurants and cafes.
