About the Item

Fantastic monumental late 19th century French painted oil on canvas folding eight-panel screen. The large screen measures over 14 feet long and features neoclassical and grand tour themes in a Zuber style. Ingeniously crafted when folded at different angles the screen appears to show completely different scenes. One direction displays the painted landscape scene panels and the opposite direction displays the neoclassical Adamesque style painted panels decorated with acanthus borders. The tops of the Adams style panels have swag drapes with fringe in a trompe l'oeil style. The screen has an aged, weathered patina that lends to its charm and character. The colors pigments are still bright, vivid, and beautifully executed. The reverse side of the screen has a botanical study in frames with a striped ground.
