Description as follows:
Folding Screen
Georg Hulbe (1851-1917)1900HamburgEmbossed leather and carved beechH 177,7 cm; W 172 cm
The MKG owns a collection of splendid luxurious pieces crafted by the leather artist Georg Hulbe, known especially for his craft. His oeuvre dates from the threshold of Historicism and Art Nouveau, and is a combination of key-elements from both movements. At the turn of the century, Hulbe had a large workshop with no less than 200 workers. This allowed him to take on a large number of official commissions, including work for the Hamburg city hall and the Reichstag in Berlin. This screen combines both creative and traditional leather techniques such as relief-cuting, leather inlay, and embossing, and therefore, this folding screen is a great example of Hulbe’s virtuosity. At the International Exposition of 1900 in Paris he was awarded a gold medal for his craft.
Condition: very good, wear commensurate with age- leather joinery between the panels is in good condition and was professionally replaced sometime in the 20th century- the look is seamless and consistent with the original piece, minor losses to crosshatch stiching, barely discernable, minor scuffing and very light staining. This piece has been well cared for.
Georg Hulbe's work is also in the permanent collection of Metropolitan Museum of Art.
