About the Item

A refined six-panel Japanese folding screen hand-painted with a graceful arrangement of seasonal chrysanthemums and small birds. Likely dating to the early 20th century during the Taishō period (1912–1926), this composition presents tall flowering stalks in shades of white, saffron, lavender, and blush, each anchored to slender bamboo supports and surrounded by fluttering sparrows or butterflies. The palette is soft and naturalistic, with subtle gradations in the foliage and petals rendered in mineral pigments over a warm, cream-toned ground. Borders of gold-toned paper and a black lacquered wood frame add richness and contrast, enhancing the screen’s decorative impact. Well-suited for both traditional and modern interiors, this piece works beautifully as a wall leaning artwork or as a free-standing partition to subtly define space. The screen’s vertical rhythm, tonal restraint, and serene natural motifs offer designers and collectors alike a versatile statement piece, equally at home in minimalist interiors, wabi-sabi environments, or eclectic spaces that appreciate historical Asian craftsmanship. It could be repapered for a fee. Japan, circa 1920. Minor surface wear consistent with age and use.
