Antique French Travel Case, Bag Sterling Silver Vanity Set, 14pc
About the Item
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The outer case is black leather that remains supple, opulently elegant, and even the old handle is in fine condition. The handle top is the only part of the case that shows much age, and you'll find a few very light crease/cracks across the top from it stretching in use. But it's in remarkably good condition for one of these fine old sets. There is not a key to work in the lock, though you might be able to locate one through a locksmith. The fasteners do hold the case very securely closed for travel, however, with no threat of it opening in transit. The bottles are in fine condition, save one low round jar and that one is marked in our listing photos so you can see that it has a crack, has been dropped at some point. The others are all in fine condition. The caps show very light use, perhaps a surface abrasion or a tiny ding on a couple of them, but generally un-dented, which isn't too surprising when you consider how thick and heavy a gauge French silver is. It's one reason why French silver brings a higher premium price - it's just so heavy! The silver caps alone are quite heavy and valuable. A truly superb old set. The bottles with stoppers are shown. There are some bottles without stoppers, but those have interior good cork set into lid to prevent leak. The marks you see on the suede leather lid liner are tarnish marks and can probably be cleaned off, but I did not attempt it. It is leather lined, throughout. As you can see, compartments beneath the lift-out tray of round jars can hold jewelry, a change of underclothing for an overnight train - the things a traveler might need. Astoundingly lovely old case and full of the original traveler's vanity jars/bottles. Silver weight for just the caps is 17 troy ounces. Quite rare, indeed! I might add here that we've sold 6 of these fine French vanity cases in the past 2 months, some at nearly $4000. Apparently the allure of the Grand Tour still exists out there. Bon Voyage!
