About the Item

Exceptional and extremely rare privateer/pirate chest in solid oak. The wood is richly carved with rosettes. The bottom of the trunk is pierced with holes which allowed it to be bolted to the floor in the captain's cabin on boats. The interior has large wrought iron hinges, chiseled on the lid The middle hinge has a lug which, once the lid is closed, hooks into the rear panel of the trunk to prevent the lid from being torn off/forced. It's a real safe. The chest still has one of its two hand-wrought iron side handles. Originally there was an additional lock behind the front latch but it no longer exists. However, the latch remains with its very large hand-forged iron padlock and its original key. This chest is a museum piece - extremely rare France - Louis XIV Period Possibly from Saint Malo, a large French corsair city. Commerce raiding / Handelskrieg is a form of naval warfare used to destroy or disrupt the enemy's logistics on the high seas by attacking its merchant navy, rather than engaging its fighters or imposing a blockade against them. Racing warfare refers to the naval operations carried out by privateers. Indeed, in the 17th century, States relied as much on their privateers as on their royal navy to win wars. French Parisienne Black wood and brass travel trunk - 19th Paris France
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
Very fine late 19th century travel trunk in wood, brass, black coated canvas and interior fabric by A. Maille-Lavolaille. This superb trunk bears a plate monogrammed "C.F & Cie Paris" and a second plate numbered 2. The lock is inscribed "A. MAILLE-LAVOLAILLE" and "3 Rue Croix-des-Petits-Champs" are the name and Paris address of the manufacturer. The signature on the lock is quite rare, making this model particularly interesting. A goddess or gorgon is engraved on the top of the lock. A label remains inside the trunk. This extremely decorative, yet useful and historic trunk has very nice dimensions. The trunk shows signs of wear due to its age and many travels, making it a wonderful witness to history. Late 19th century - France The Lavolaille firm, successor to Katz et Cie, was founded in 1845, specializing in trunks for sales representatives. Made of wood, with strong handles and straps, and with interior layouts that varied according to the object, they were the ancestors of the "marmotte". Lavolaille would later join forces with A. Maille, another trunk manufacturer specialized in commercial travelers. Most trunks are covered with black canvas, steel or brass edging and decorative upholstery nails on the top or front of the trunk. Some trunks had nails signed "Lavolaille", like Louis Vuitton nails.
