About the Item

Early 20th century Art Déco french metal brass wall coat hanger/rack designed by La Maison Desny By: La Maison Desny Material: brass, copper, metal, zinc Technique: cast, forged, metalwork, molded, polished Dimensions: 10 in x 36 in x 9 in Date: early 20th century, circa 1930 Style: Art Déco Place of origin: France This large, early 20th century Art Déco french brass wall coat rack displays expert metalwork and design. Forged from polished brass, the piece comprises a central cylindrical post with five sturdy hooks for hanging coats and jackets. This post is supported by two sturdy L-shaped brackets that can be fixed to the wall. Resting on these brackets are four horizontal brass rods, arranged parallel and consecutively to provide surfaces for holding smaller items. The designer's marks can be found on the side, serving as proof of authorship and the place of origin. The piece was created by progressive french design house La Maison Desny, who partnered with prominent architects to produce cutting-edge furnishings. The company operated between 1927 and 1933 in Paris, seeking to capture the spirit of the times through purity of form and to push boundaries. This elegant wall coat hanger is a testament to their visionary Art Déco style, which continues to feel modern nearly a century later. The polished brass surface bears marks from decades of use, giving the rack a charming, old patina, as can be seen in the pictures.
