About the Item

Decorate an entryway with this charming and richly colored barbotine umbrella stand. Crafted in France circa 1890, the tall decorative vessel is made of glazed majolica ceramic and features a sculptural stork perched gracefully beside a hollow tree trunk–form reservoir. The base is adorned with naturalistic details including a frog, blooming flowers, and lush foliage, evoking the atmosphere of a vibrant marshland scene. Executed in vivid polychrome glazes—creamy white for the bird, rich greens, ochres, and deep earth tones for the surrounding vegetation—the piece reflects the exuberant naturalism typical of French barbotine ceramics from the period. A glossy glaze enhances the sculptural contours and gives the surface a lively, light-catching sheen. Standing approximately 35 inches high, the piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a few small repairs around the base. Both decorative and functional, this whimsical stand would make a striking addition to a foyer, garden room, or covered terrace. A delightful example of late 19th-century French ceramic artistry, blending imaginative form with natural beauty.
