Rare 19th Century Chinoiserie Hand-Painted Panels Circa 1820
Located in Richmond, London
A rare and superbly decorative set of four Chinoiserie wallpaper panels, exquisitely hand-painted with exotic birds and butterflies in the garden, on a pale pink/peach background. Each panel is beautifully framed in a modern simulated bamboo frame. Chinese, Canton, Qing dynasty, early 19th century. Why we like them The exquisite quality of decoration and the miraculous state of preservation for a decorative artwork on paper make these panels a truly rare find. The subtlety of colours, bold yet not garish, lend a 'noble' look to the piece. History Such luxurious items were popular in England during the height of fashion for oriental exoticism, called chinoiserie in Europe.  The young Prince of Wales (future King George IV) was often described as having a wildly extravagant taste in decorating his palaces. As early as 1801, the Prince had been completely taken by Oriental tastes and began to expand his existing Brighton retreat. Having been presented a gift of Chinese wallpaper, he ordered a Chinese Gallery to display the new paper. The 162-foot long room was contrived of painted glass decorated with flowers, insects, fruit and birds. The Prince's desire for additional structures in the Oriental manner resulted in commissioning the fashionable architect John Nash and the designer Frederick Crace...

Swedish Grace and Grandeur: The Aquatint Legacy of Ulrik Thersner, 1825
Located in Langweer, NL
This hand-colored aquatint is a topographical view of Djursholm Castle in Danderyd, Sweden, and it is a part of Ulrik Thersner's ambitious project, "Fordna och närvarande Sverige" (Antiquity and Present Sweden). This work aimed to be a modern counterpart to Erik Dahlbergh's "Suecia antiqua et hodierna," a significant 17th-century work that showcased Sweden's historical and contemporary landscapes, buildings, and monuments through engravings. Ulrik Thersner's endeavor in creating "Fordna och närvarande Sverige" involved drawing several mansions, among other subjects, and began publishing these works in 1817. The technique used, aquatint, is a form of etching that allows for the creation of images with tonal variations, resembling watercolor paintings, which makes it particularly suited for detailed and atmospheric topographical representations like the one of Djursholm Castle. Carl Fredrik Akrell, a notable engraver, worked on engraving Thersner's images, which were then executed in aquatint, a process that allows for a rich gradation of tones and a painterly quality. Wilhelm Maximilian Carpelan later joined the publication effort, indicating a collaborative process in bringing Thersner's vision to fruition. The parts of the series were published over a period, with Skåne completed in 1823, and the regions of Östergötland, Uppland, and Södermanland addressed in the years 1820 and 1824-25. Thersner's personal involvement in writing the text for the pictures underlines the detailed and scholarly approach taken in producing this series. Thersner's "Fordna och närvarande Sverige" would have been an invaluable contribution to the documentation of Swedish cultural heritage and landscape during the early 19th century, providing a vivid pictorial record that would have appealed to both the scholarly community and the general public interested in the country's history and geography. The print of Djursholm Castle that you are referring to would be a part of this important series. More about the maker: Ulrik Thersner was a multifaceted individual, having an impactful military career alongside his work as a draftsman and topographer. Born on April 2, 1779, in Kyrkslätt parish in Finland, Thersner began his military service early, becoming a ship's boy in the Swedish navy at the tender age of seven. His naval service during Gustav III's Russian War...

Pair of Klismos Chairs, Early 19th Century, George Oakley - 4 Pairs Available
By George Oakley
Located in Richmond, London
An exceptional pair of Regency period chairs, with a well-shaped 'Klismos' outline and unusually generous proportions, attributed to George Oakley of Bond Street. London, circa 1810. Four pairs available: to purchase a set of eight chairs, please select quantity 4 pairs. Priced per pair. Why we like them: With front legs unusually splayed in two dimensions, this design is one of the most sophisticated examples from the Regency period. Unusual in form, subtle in ornamentation, and outstanding in quality, these chairs display the decorative techniques of cabinetmaking, rather than joinery. The veneers and Greek-key brass inlays cover the seat rails and front leg joints—a highly unusual feature for chairs—demonstrating superb cabinetmaking skills and suggesting a high-end workshop origin. Attribution: The extremely rare ‘double-splayed’ front legs, derived from ancient Greek Klismos seats, along with exquisite brass inlays, contribute to these chairs' distinctive elegance. This form, along with certain decorative elements, aligns with other pieces traditionally attributed to George Oakley (1773–1840), one of the foremost London cabinetmakers of the period. The scrolling foliage pattern of the inlays on the back tablets of these chairs matches the decoration on a spider-leg sofa table illustrated in F. Collard’s Regency Furniture (Woodbridge, 1987, p. 317) and Mallett’s The Age of Matthew Boulton - Masterpieces of Neo-classicism (London, 2000, pp. 112-113). This table, belonging to a group of furniture firmly attributed to Oakley, likely originates from the same workshop as these chairs. An identically decorated daybed, en suite with these chairs, appears in the same Mallett catalogue (pp. 94-95). A magnificent center table, featuring the same inlays and possibly from the same suite, was sold at Christie’s, New York, 29 January 1994, lot 342. An identical pair of chairs is illustrated in Ronald Phillips’s Fine Antique English Furniture 2018, pp. 158-159. George Oakley: George Oakley’s firm produced stylish Grecian-inspired furniture around the turn of the 19th century, pioneering ‘Buhl’ inlay, a decorative technique that regained popularity in the Regency’s early years. Fashionable materials like rosewood, mahogany, and calamander were often used in Oakley's furniture, combined with satinwood, ebony inlays, brass stars, and metal bands. His high-class furniture earned him a royal appointment and a reputation for fine craftsmanship. Visits by the royal family to Oakley's Bond St. Showrooms are recorded as in the Morning Chronicle of 1799. In May, “the ROYAL FAMILY, with the PRINCE and PRINCESS of ORANGE did Mr. OAKLEY the honor of viewing his Printed Furniture...

Alongside the main gong, two small gongs...
