1757 Engraving of Inuit & Indigenous Peoples – Hudson Bay & Arctic Canoe Scene
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: 1757 Engraving of Inuit & Indigenous Peoples – Hudson Bay & Arctic Canoe Scene
Description: This rare 1757 antique copperplate engraving presents two fascinating scenes depicting Indigenous life in Arctic Canada, focusing on the Inuit and other First Nations communities in the Hudson Bay region. Originally published in *Histoire Générale des Voyages*, the engraving provides an invaluable visual record of daily life, survival techniques, and traditional dwellings.
The top illustration, titled 'Un Esquimau dans son Canot', depicts an Inuit paddling a sleek, narrow kayak through choppy waters, showcasing the remarkable boat-making skills of the Arctic peoples. The kayak, designed for hunting and efficient travel, is shown in its traditional form, reflecting centuries of adaptation to harsh northern environments.
The bottom illustration, 'Esquimaux du côté du Nord-Ouest de la Baie de Hudson', portrays a male and female Inuit figure standing near an igloo, a crucial form of temporary winter shelter. The man holds a bow and arrows, symbolizing subsistence hunting, while the woman carries a small child. In the background, additional Indigenous dwellings, including conical tipis, suggest the presence of other First Nations groups living near the Hudson Bay coastline.
The detailed hatching and shading techniques used in the engraving bring out the textures of clothing, landscapes, and architectural features, making this a historically and artistically significant piece. As an early European representation of Arctic Indigenous culture, it holds great value for collectors of ethnographic art, Canadian history, and antique travel prints...

18th Century English George III Period Mahogany Armchair with Modern Fabric
Located in Chicago, IL
This is a finely carved 1760 English George III armchair. The George III period was named after the English monarch of the time. It was popular among the elite and mercantile class of people, due to its excellent material and intricate carvings. Due to the multiple King Georges, each George developed its own look. The George III period is also referred to as the Chippendale style. This period was often characterized by drawing on both the Rococo and Gothic styles. Pieces sported curves, arches, Chinese influences, and cabriole legs. This chair has been entirely carved out of mahogany; a premiere wood choice known for its durability, longevity, and rich coloring. The back has an elegant splat, a principal element of eighteenth-century English chairs. Splats are the center support for a chair’s open back and originated from the importation of Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs...

Bow Pair of Porcelain Figures, Arlecchino and Columbina, Rococo ca 1758
Located in London, GB
This is a wonderful pair of figures of Arlecchino and Columbina, made by the Bow Porcelain factory in about 1758. These figures formed part of a series of the Commedia dell'Arte, a very popular series of theatrical figures that served as decoration at the dinner table in the 18th Century.
The Bow Porcelain Factory was one of the first potteries in Britain to make soft paste porcelain, and most probably the very first to use bone ash, which later got perfected by Josiah Spode to what is now the universally used "bone china". Bow was the main competitor of the Chelsea Porcelain Factory, but where Chelsea made very fine slipcast porcelain, Bow made a different soft paste porcelain that tended to be softer and could be pressed into moulds. Bow served a larger public generally at lower prices. The factory was only in operation between 1743 and 1774, after which the tradition got incorporated into some of the later famous potteries such as Worcester and Derby.
These figures were used to adorn the dinner table when dessert was served; groups of figures served to express something about the host, the guests, or to direct the conversation. The Italian Commedia Dell'Arte, a comical form of masked theatre, was very popular in those days and Bow copied many figures of the German Meissen series that were brought out in the decades before.
This pair dates from about 1758, which was at the height of Bow's ability to make beautiful figurines often copied from Chelsea or Meissen. The pair is modelled after a Meissen pair by Kaendler. The porcelain is translucent with a beautiful milky glaze - Bow was probably the first pottery using bone in its porcelain recipe. Arlecchino (Harlequin) is playing the bagpipes, dressed in an odd costume of mismatched chintz and playing cards and wearing a funny black trumpet...
