Ukrainian Rug, c. 1900

About the Item

Ukrainian Rug, c. 1900 This knotted pile carpet draws large bunches of floral bouquets against a dark ground. Complementary floral borders link large rose flowers and foliage. While the inspiration for this imagery was French, this carpet was most likely woven in southern Ukraine or Moldova. During the turn of the century, French models were at the height of fashion across Europe and beyond. The floral imagery drawn here is most likely derived from French tapestries of the Aubusson type. Khamseh Rug, c. 1900 The Khamseh were a confederacy of five southwest Persian tribes created with the support of the Persian imperial government in order to check the power of the influential Qashqai tribal confederacy in the same region. While many southwest Persian tribal rugs are defined by geometric angular drawing incorporating diamonds and latch-hooks, others were inspired by formal Persian textiles and faithfully executed more curvilinear drawing, especially repeat ‘boteh’ paisleys. This elegant Khamseh rug draws large but delicate paisleys floating within a field of blossoming foliage in the manner of a fine Persian shawl...
