About the Item
Rug runners from Karabagh region of the Caucasus are rather rare. The design of this beautiful Caucasian Karabagh long runner consists of a series of seven large connected diamond shapes interconnected by smaller diamond forms set in a field of rich brick color. The border is smaller geometric shapes in bright red, blue, green, and yellow. The rug has a date 1313 (Islamic calendar) weaved in it corresponding to 1895 AD. The overall design and color implementation in Karabagh rugs and kilims often resemble French impressionist paintings of the 1800s.

19th Century Caucasian Kazak Runner
Located in Barrington, IL
A triple medallion Karachov Kazak runner from the Caucasus region woven in the 4th quarter of the 1800s. The beauty of the rug is in having three large medallions each covering around one-third of the field and each having its own design and color scheme including rust red, pale yellow, and cream. The other accent colors include pale green, yellow, French blue, and brown. Truly a masterpiece of village weaving from the late 1800s.

Early 20th Century Caucasian Sevan Kazak
Located in Barrington, IL
A beautiful Caucasian Sevan Kazak from the early 1900s. This Kazak is unusually large with the “Sevan” pattern set in a dark red color field. The large medallion design is in purple, dark red, and ivory colors with geometric design elements in blue, yellow and green colors. The border is in ivory background with designs in blue, red, yellow, and green. The use of vegetable dyes and the gradual change in tones (abrash) is beautifully demonstrated in this rug where one can see three different shades of the same color.
