About the Item

This fantastic work of textile art is from a very rare and small group of antique Kazak Rugs woven around Lake Sewan in Southern Caucasus. Dated 1860. Fascinating natural dyed colors and a beautiful design, depicting a stylized shield pattern surrounded by tribal motifs, flowers, small animals, kites, combs, hooks, earrings and most importantly a bride, groom and possibly father & mother in law in their special ceremonial dresses. This special rug was most likely woven by a young female artisan for her wedding as maiden's trousseau and the wedding took place in year 1860. There are a handful Caucasian rugs of this specific group that were publicly sold and in the museums around the world including one at the "Vakiflar Museum" in Istanbul However none of them has the bride, groom, father & mother and a woven date all together. To the best of our knowledge, there is only one other with a date on it which is younger than ours and it doesn't have any human patterns. Another example with a dark color palette and some condition issues was sold by John Moron Auctioneers in CA for $19,500, again it didn't have a date and bride, groom, father and mother either. One of the publicly sold pieces of this group of rare rugs was offered by a well known rug dealer and scholar at a San Francisco Tribal & Textile Arts Show and sold for $25,000.

Antique Caucasian Kazak Rug 3'10'' x 7'7''

In circa 1179 a young man who would grow up to be Cinggis Qahan (Ghengis Khan) was aided by the son of the Chieftain of the Arulat clan. The young man was Bo'orcu. He became one of Cinggis Qahan's Dorben Kulu'ud (Great Warriors). In the Yuan ch'ao pi-shih, Quatrain 205, it is recorded that later in life Cinggis Qahan said "Let Bo'orcu govern the ten thousand of the right hand which take the Altai as pillow." In other words the Qahan gave a proto-tribal unit to a key general. The Lu of Bo'orculu as coming from the same root as the Mongol term Ulus which means the land, animals, and people, that a that an IL or tribal group controls. These people became known as the Bo'orculu or people of Bo'orcu. Over the years Bo'orculu becomes Borchalu. So if Ford is correct and I believe he is that the Borchalu are Mongol than they must be descended from the Horde of Bo'orcu. The Sultanate of Borchali was located in the southeastern part of Georgia and in the eastern part of today's Turkey. At the beginning of the 18th century, Borchali was vassal of the Khanate of Ganja and in 1736 was ceded by Persian Emperor Nadir Shah...
