About the Item

Kilim, a word of Turkish origin, denotes a pile less textile of many uses produced by one of several flat-weaving techniques that have a common or closely related heritage and are practiced in the geographical area that includes parts of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China. Kilim’s are generally woven with the slit weave technique. The slit refers to the gap left between two blocks of color. It is created by returning the weft around the last warp in a color area, and the weft of the adjacent color is later returned around the adjacent warp. The major difference between a Kilim area rug and a carpet or a pile rug is that whereas the design visible on a pile rug is made by individual short strands of different color being knotted onto the warps and held together by pressing the wefts tightly, Kilim designs are made by interweaving the variously colored wefts and warps, thus creating what is known as a flat-weave. Weavers pack the weft tightly to completely cover the warp and often favour diagonal patterns so as to avoid weakening the structure of the rug with vertical slits. It produces bold, sharp patterns that weavers enjoy creating with more freedom allowed than a plain weave. This is also why Kilim’s are so closely associated with geometrical designs even though there are Kilim’s with floral designs as well. This lovely antique blue Caucasian Kilim carpet measures: 4.7 x 8.3 ft. and is from the 1940s.

Antique Kilim Rug Blue and Beige Brown All-Over Geometric Pattern by Rug & Kilim
Located in Long Island City, NY
Handmade in flat-woven wool originating from Turkey circa 1920, this vintage rug is a mid-century Kilim rug of a dynamic nature, suspected to be of Albanian design influence in employing exciting accenting colors in the prevailing beige-brown and blue colorways with a departure from traditional symmetry for a more eccentric transitional style. Connoisseurs will note the natural sense of movement and liveliness in the whimsical pink, red, and gold colorway that reads with a more regal quality than expected in such an approachable Kilim rug, further enjoying versatile 7x10 dimensions welcoming to dining room and living room projects among its wide array of possibilities. The culmination of rare elements...
