Antique Caucasian Hand-Woven Wool Rug

About the Item

This beautiful wool rug was woven in circa 1870 in the Shirvan district of eastern Caucasus. This district is well-known for its history of producing fine rugs and carpets. Shirvan rugs began to be exported to Europe in great number in the late 19th Century, following the completion of the Trans-Caucasian railway in the 1870s. As a result, these rugs became fashionable and highly sought-after by the European elite. The wool rug features a red field, decorated with three blue eight-point star-shaped medallions, which enclose red and white floral and geometric shapes and are outlined in yellow. White, black, turquoise and blue stylised vegetal motifs and animals are woven in the space around the blue stars. The rug’s field is set within white, blue, red and green borders, which are decorated with colourful geometric and floral motifs. The top and bottom ends of the rug are fringed.

Large Romanian Knotted Carpet, Attributed to Tuduc
By Theodor Tuduc 1
Located in London, GB
This beautiful, vibrant carpet has been attributed to the important Romanian carpet-maker, Theodor Tuduc (1888-1893). Tuduc ran a prestigious workshop in the 19th century which specialised in the restoration and replication of antique rugs. This item, for instance, is one of a small group of carpets which were knotted after early Caucasian ‘dragon’ rugs. Tuduc's copies of antique rugs were so beautiful and accurate that they have become almost as collectable as the originals. The carpet field is knotted with beautiful stylised depictions of animals, birds and dragons, as well as fruit trees, flowers, and foliage. These designs have been rendered in red, orange, light blue, turquoise, navy, green, mustard yellow, and off-white. This field is set within a border, knotted with similarly colored foliate motifs against an off-white background. Literature: For early Caucasian dragon carpets...
