Antique Caucasian Shirvan Area Rug 3'10" x 5'5"

About the Item

Shirvan rug, floor covering handmade in the Shirvan region of Azerbaijan in the Southeastern Caucasus. With the exception of a group of rugs woven in the vicinity of Baku, most Shirvans are found in small sizes, with examples from the southern part of the area around the town of Saliani more likely to be in the long, narrow format described in the West as runners. The area around Maraza has produced many prayer rugs, including a well-known type with boteh (leaf-shaped) figures on a blue field. Most small Shirvan rugs are not specifically identifiable as to village source, as they share a range of geometric field designs and borders. They are generally less finely woven than rugs from farther north in the Kuba district, although they are finer than the Kazakh-type rugs made in western Azerbaijan. Shirvan rugs are usually all wool, but some may show cotton wefts and cotton edges.

Antique Caucasian Kazak Rug 3'10'' x 7'7''
Located in New York, NY
In circa 1179 a young man who would grow up to be Cinggis Qahan (Ghengis Khan) was aided by the son of the Chieftain of the Arulat clan. The young man was Bo'orcu. He became one of Cinggis Qahan's Dorben Kulu'ud (Great Warriors). In the Yuan ch'ao pi-shih, Quatrain 205, it is recorded that later in life Cinggis Qahan said "Let Bo'orcu govern the ten thousand of the right hand which take the Altai as pillow." In other words the Qahan gave a proto-tribal unit to a key general. The Lu of Bo'orculu as coming from the same root as the Mongol term Ulus which means the land, animals, and people, that a that an IL or tribal group controls. These people became known as the Bo'orculu or people of Bo'orcu. Over the years Bo'orculu becomes Borchalu. So if Ford is correct and I believe he is that the Borchalu are Mongol than they must be descended from the Horde of Bo'orcu. The Sultanate of Borchali was located in the southeastern part of Georgia and in the eastern part of today's Turkey. At the beginning of the 18th century, Borchali was vassal of the Khanate of Ganja and in 1736 was ceded by Persian Emperor Nadir Shah...

Antique Caucasian Shirvan Kilim Rug 5'5 x 9'10
Located in New York, NY
Antique Caucasian Shirvan Kilim Rug 5'5 x 9'10. This is a Shirvan Kilim long rug with a pattern of wide navy horizontal rows of stepped hexagons enclosing smaller, similar hooked devices. Instead of wide and somewhat narrower bands alternating, the latter have shrunk to thinner ivory lines with stepped crosses as ornaments. Terra cotta, ivory, medium blue, yellow-tan and brown-lack are among the salient tones of this slit tapestry carpet with a generally more restrained palette. At the ends of the broad sections are amusing geometric fillers. The general tonality extends to the dark grey-brown barber pole warps. In their country of origin, these kilims had multiple functions: floor coverings, room dividers, wall decorations, cart covers, indeed any place where a durable, colorful larger scale textile...
