About the Item

A very early example of Kazak rug, attributed to the village of Fachralo in the southwest Caucasus. It's characterised by a light blue central reserve containing a central ivory diamond medallion with a hooked contour, and punctuated by polychrome hooked motifs including the kotchanak, which often appears on the woven art of the Turkmen people. The top and bottom ends of this rectangular reserve show a particular indentation, which is related to a specific type of early Anatolian rug and is denoted as the double keyhole pattern; a group of these early rugs appear on the Renaissance paintings of Gentile Bellini, and is also known as the 'Bellini motif'. Kazaks of such early vintage are quite difficult to come by and are particularly in demand with Caucasian rug connoisseurs.
