About the Item

Chi Chi rugs, with their rich variety of small-format geometric motifs which hermetically cover the field and borders, are considered some of the most elaborate Caucasian weavings. The midnight green field of this piece is filled with an immaculately drawn Khyrdaghyd repeat design that is typical of the provenance and framed to good effect by a wide five-panel border section. The field includes crosses inscribed within shield medallions, Lezghi stars, hooked medallions, and polychrome serrated leaves. The five-panel border contains polychrome rosettes, trefoils, and diagonal barber poles on the minor borders while the main border includes a Chi Chi design of rosettes and geometric diagonal leaves. While Chi Chi rugs are often weaved in a navy-blue field, this rug appears to be a break from the norm with the introduction of a rare midnight green color with colorful motifs in the border.
