About the Item

Carpets originating from the Azerbaijani town of Sarab are quite rare. They are characterised by an elongated format and a camel background, which is decorated with geometric motifs. Earlier pieces like the one illustrated here are distinguished by a more open design and by a plain wide outer frame adorned with paisley motifs (see R.E. Tschebull, 'Sarab', Hali, vol. 17, no. 1, London, February-March 1995, pg. 90). Here the pattern consists of parallel rows of lozenges of various sizes, within paisley motifs contained within. The lozenges are placed onto a camel field interrupted by dark blue dots. The visual contrast between the elegance of the floral elements and the rigid framework is what gives drama and tension to this carpet. Its appeal is further increased by the openness of the border. The visual landscape created by such a combination underlines the artistic nature of antique carpets from Azerbaijan, which often embody tribal icons with more urban styles, creating weavings of unsurpassed beauty.
