About the Item

Relying on ancient tribal motifs, geometric designs, and playful abstractions, Caucasian rugs are woven in tribal settings by either village or nomadic folk. Caucasian rugs are woven in Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Southwest Russia by a multitude of cultures and tribes that employ distinct characteristics unique to their communities. Shirvan rugs are highly stylized colorful rugs produced in the Shirvan region, East Caucasus of modern-day Azerbaijan by Azeri Turks and Armenians. Woven primarily in small sizes, there are countless variants native to each town or village that specialize in weaving certain types of rugs. For the most part, the design and color palette can be attributed to a particular part of the Shirvan region. Tribal motifs, small medallions, and saturated colors are all trademark components of these types of rugs. Deviating from the norm, this present example is of an exceptionally large size. Four enlarged lozenge medallions are placed along an attractive blue-grey field with various stylized tribal motifs such as latch hooks, animals, rosettes, and stars. The border area consists of a polychrome ancient Caucasian interlocking pattern accentuating the piece.
