About the Item

This monumental Caucasian Kilim Borcialu, measuring an impressive 435 × 134 cm, is a rare and visually captivating example of tribal flatweave artistry from the South Caucasus region. Woven entirely by hand, it showcases the bold geometric language and vivid natural dyes that define the Borcialu weaving tradition, a style associated with nomadic or semi-nomadic groups often inhabiting regions of modern-day Azerbaijan and Georgia. The composition features a dynamic vertical sequence of rectilinear medallions, each holding eight-pointed star motifs, stylized hooks, and amulet-like symbols believed to ward off evil. The color palette is vibrant and earthy, dominated by saturated reds, indigo, golden ochre, ivory, and rich walnut brown — all achieved through time-honored natural dyeing methods. The borders are densely decorated with diagonal chevrons, crosses, and abstract zoomorphic shapes, forming a richly patterned frame that enhances the piece’s tribal elegance. Due to its sheer size, this kilim may have originally been used for architectural or ceremonial purposes, perhaps as a wall hanging in a yurt, a protective tent panel, or a floor covering for special gatherings. Today, it stands as a museum-quality textile, perfect for collectors, galleries, or interiors with soaring walls and a taste for cultural authenticity. Despite minor age-related wear, the piece is in very good condition and remains structurally sound. A remarkable acquisition that offers scale, symbolism, and raw artistic power in one woven masterpiece.
