About the Item
Antique 19th Century Caucasian Runner
Size: 5'1" × 12'6" (154 × 381 cm).
This exquisite 19th century Caucasian runner is a masterful example of traditional craftsmanship from the rugged mountain regions between the Black and Caspian Seas. Featuring a striking and intricate all-over pattern, this antique runner exemplifies the precision, artistry, and symbolic richness typical of highland Caucasian weaving traditions.
The central field is adorned with a meticulously repeated lattice of stylized boteh (paisley) motifs—each rendered in rich tones of crimson, ivory, navy blue, and soft beige. The botehs are encased in octagonal medallions that interlock in a mesmerizing rhythmic composition, forming a captivating visual tapestry.
These boteh forms, with their distinctive curled tips and floral accents, symbolize fertility and eternal life in Persian and Caucasian culture, adding layers of meaning to the rug’s aesthetic appeal.
Framing the central field is a robust series of borders, with the widest outer band featuring a scrolling vine and floral rosette pattern in pale blue, ivory, and coral red on a vivid sky-blue ground. This is followed by several narrower guard stripes filled with geometric motifs and a serrated leaf design that offers a dynamic contrast to the denser central field.
The color palette is both bold and balanced—dominated by deep indigo and madder red, softened by lighter camel and ivory accents, all achieved with natural vegetable dyes that have aged beautifully over time.
Hand-knotted using high-quality wool on a wool foundation, the rug boasts a dense weave with a sturdy yet supple handle. The craftsmanship reflects the tribal tradition of nomadic or village weaving, with minor asymmetries and unique variations that authenticate its handmade nature. The rug remains in very good condition for its age, retaining excellent pile and clarity of design, with only light, age-appropriate wear.
Rich in heritage and artistry, this handmade rug exemplifies the high standards of Doris Leslie Blau’s curated pieces. With a wide range of prices, Doris Leslie Blau makes exceptional rugs accessible to collectors and designers alike.
