About the Item

Antique 19th Century Karabagh Botanical Carpet Size: 6'10" × 13'9" (208 × 419 cm) This magnificent 19th-century Karabagh carpet is a striking example of the unique artistic fusion that characterizes the Caucasus region. Drawing inspiration from Western European floral tapestries—especially French Aubusson and Savonnerie traditions—while staying rooted in Eastern craftsmanship, this rug exudes a romantic, painterly elegance that has made Karabagh weavings highly sought after by collectors and interior designers alike. The carpet’s field is densely populated with a sprawling, almost abstract botanical pattern, composed of lush floral sprays, stylized vines, and foliage rendered in soft, impressionistic strokes. The composition embraces asymmetry and movement, creating a sense of natural rhythm and organic growth across the surface. While the floral forms are loosely defined, the effect is richly layered and deeply atmospheric. A warm, earthy palette of terracotta, rose, ivory, soft green, chocolate brown, and muted sky blue lends the rug a timeworn elegance. The colors—subtly faded from age—enhance the antique character and impart a sophisticated, lived-in warmth. The design has a painterly quality, more akin to fine art than to rigid geometric layouts typical of many tribal rugs. Framed by a narrow main border filled with floral motifs on a deep brown ground and flanked by lighter guard borders, the composition is visually contained but never static. The framing complements the movement of the interior without overpowering its lush informality. The rug’s size and layout make it particularly suited to large-scale rooms, formal salons, or open-plan living spaces, where its graceful, garden-like field can fully unfold. This Karabagh piece was entirely hand-knotted using high-quality wool, resulting in a soft yet durable surface. The weave is medium-density, typical of village production, and retains much of its original charm. Expertly curated by Doris Leslie Blau, this rare rug is a testament to centuries of weaving artistry. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.
