About the Item
Antique Caucasian Shirvan Rug
Size: 5'2" × 11'8" (157 × 355 cm)
An extraordinary example of Caucasian weaving artistry, this 19th-century Shirvan rug exemplifies the refined precision and visual harmony that define antique rugs from the Eastern Caucasus. Handwoven in the Shirvan region (present-day Azerbaijan), the rug is distinguished by its meticulous symmetry, geometric clarity, and distinctive blue-ground palette.
The central field features a striking composition of repeated octagonal medallions—each rendered in rich shades of indigo, camel, and ivory—encircling elaborately stylized floral motifs and symbolic emblems. These octagons are artfully staggered to create a visual rhythm, framed by angular vinery and dot accents that punctuate the design with elegant restraint.
Three ornate ivory-toned medallions, aligned along the central axis, anchor the composition and introduce a sense of structure and ceremonial grandeur. The medallions display stepped edges and floral rosettes with cruciform symmetry, lending a sacred geometry to the layout.
Encasing the central field are layered borders: a broad cobalt band filled with an alternating chain of symbolic palmettes and stylized boteh motifs, flanked by smaller guards filled with blossoms, crosses, and the characteristic Caucasian latch-hook design. The corner spandrels exhibit intricate stepped motifs in soft camel tones that harmonize beautifully with the rest of the palette.
The use of natural dyes imbues the rug with a vibrant yet aged patina, giving it both depth and authenticity. Woven with hand-spun wool on a wool foundation, the rug exhibits the tight weave and durability for which Shirvan pieces are celebrated.
Whether admired for its folkloric charm or its architectural precision, this antique Shirvan carpet is a statement of Caucasian cultural heritage and artisanal mastery.
Expertly curated by Doris Leslie Blau, this rare rug is a testament to centuries of weaving artistry. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.
