About the Item

Relying on ancient tribal motifs, geometric designs, and playful abstractions, Caucasian rugs are woven in tribal settings by either village or nomadic folk. Caucasian rugs are woven in Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Southwest Russia by a multitude of cultures and tribes that employ distinct characteristics unique to their communities. Woven in the predominantly Armenian populated region of Karabagh, rugs from this region are highly prized by both collectors for their historical value and efficient workmanship as well as by decorators for their bold colors and design patterns. Due to the absence of spacious indoor areas to fit large horizontal looms, weavers in Karabagh we restricted to weaving either small rugs, runner rugs, or gallery carpets with a maximum width of 2 meters. Yet this phenomenon did not restrain them from weaving long rugs, with some rugs reaching as long as 7 meters. At the turn of the century, French decorators who visited the Caucasus began commissioning large Karabagh Gallery carpets from the region. Using a mix of the regional designs and adding their own French flavor led to a unique cross-continental breed of luxurious gallery carpets. Rows of polychrome bouquets are wonderfully arranged over a rich ebony field in this present example. Accents of ivory, burgundy, and pastel green are evident throughout. The border area consists of a floral leaf & vine scroll design on a pale turqoise backdrop.
