About the Item
This antique Kazak Lori-Pampak measuring 210 × 135 cm (6' 10" × 4' 5"), was hand-knotted in the 18th century in the Caucasian Kazak region, where the village of Lori-Pampak is located. A large Lori community from northwestern Persia settled alongside the Armenians. In this prototype of the three-medallion form, the Lori-Pampak motif is set in ivory octagons, flanked by four hexagons on each side, curiously two of which are not hooked on the outside. Groups of four claws or abstractions of birds complete the decoration inside the octagons, while the flattened octagonal central medallion, scaled on the longer sides, rests on a royal blue background and is made important by the double ivory frames. The field, asymmetrically scattered with geometric decorations, is of a very pleasant brick color, attenuated by time. The main frame on a blue background and the two secondary ones on a black background display an orderly sequence of rosettes. Image of great solemnity, sober and balanced that reveals a capacity for decisive choice.
