About the Item

The allure of the carpets from eastern Turkestan, better known as Samarkands, is best exemplified in the perfect balance between the force of the geometric design and the graceful eloquence of the curvilinear motifs. Here the pattern is distinguished by a central element from which sprout pairs of stylised palmettes and lancet leafs flanked by two roundels each containing a Mandala. While the various filler motifs are typical of the iconography of Samarkand rugs, the lively palette is characteristic of the Art Deco period.
