Antique Late 19h Century Turkmen rug
About the Item
This is an antique Turkmen rug, likely of Yomut or Tekke origin, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. It measures 2.35m x 1.50m and was originally a longer piece that was cut and carefully mended in the past, a common practice in tribal textiles. The rug exhibits significant wear from time, enhancing its authenticity and character.
The design features a rich brown field densely patterned with traditional göls, arranged in staggered rows, rendered in deep reds, ivory, indigo, and burnt orange, all naturally dyed. The primary border showcases intricate Turkmen geometric motifs, while the secondary borders feature zigzag and meandering patterns that frame the composition beautifully.
Despite its age and wear, the wool remains soft and well-knotted, with a supple handle typical of high-quality tribal weaving. The ends display remnants of kilim bands, though there is some loss, further testifying to its history.
This is an excellent piece for collectors, decorators, or anyone seeking an authentic, time-worn tribal textile that carries the legacy of Central Asian nomadic craftsmanship. It will add a distinct historical charm to any space.
