About the Item
Antique Turkmen Saryk Chuval, 19th Century
Saryk bags and trappings are some of the most opulent of Turkmen weavings. This large Saryk tent bag uses wool pile with cotton white as well as gold and cochineal pink silk highlights. Using a burgundy madder ground and copious detailing with cochineal dyed wool yields a rich tone-on-tone composition. Two different renditions of stylized trees abound in both the top and bottom panels. A classic eponymous Saryk border frames the piece.
