About the Item
Susani, Uzbekistan, first half 19th. cent., Samarkand, wonderful silk embroidery in Basma and Tambour stitch. Dowry pieces like this were made on narrow stripes of hand-woven cotton which were embroidered separately and later joined, especially interesting in this piece are the small filling details in a multitude of colors which also can be found in the neighboring town of Dshisak, see Franz Besch in Bausback Susani 1981.

View AllVintage Persian Afshar Rug Carpet 5'7 x 9'9
Located in New York, NY
Vintage Persian Afshar rug carpet, 5'7 x 9'9. The antique tribal rugs of the Afshar tribe are woven primarily in southwest Persia and come in a bewildering variety of designs, some indigenous, some adapted from other tribes or urban sources. Normally they are in scatter sizes, 3-4 feet by 5-7 feet, with a few room size carpets. Afshar rugs may be symmetrically or asymmetrically knotted, on cotton or wool foundations. Similarly, the attractive color schemes range from light to dark, ivory to navy. The informal, but charming, patterns may be medallions, arabesques, allover textile designs or abstract geometric motives. A few Afshars are located in Azerbaijan province, northwest Persia. The Afshars originated in Central Asia and came to Persia in the 18th century with the conqueror Nader Shah.

Blending naturalism with ethereal fantasy, this spectacular embroidery or ‘suzani‘ from Central Asia conveys an aesthetic consistent with older examples of the genre. Certain features, most notably the vine-scroll, are reminiscent of the Samarkand school, while the drawing of the blossoms seems more prevalent in the repertoire of neighboring Shahrisabz. Indeed, this piece may in fact be a common ancestor to both. Splendid palmettes with flame-like tracery and bold swirling star-centered blossoms alternate within the border. Vegetal scroll meanders throughout—drawn with several shades of green conveying, if not a sense of shadowing, definite and deliberate tonalities of light and dark. The central hourglass form, idiosyncrasies of drawing, and arrangement of blossoms in the field imbue a sense of classicism rivaling and surpassing older Ottoman and Persian models.
