Antique Yomud Bokhara Rug

About the Item

Turkoman rugs and carpets are woven in the region east of the Caspian Sea known as West Turkestan, populated by nomadic tribes. The design element that distinguishes this type of rug is the gul medallion, which is usually octagonal in shape, and includes smaller geometric elements inside. These medallions are used as field decorations often arranged in parallel or offset columns. Each tribe had their own distinctive tribal emblem or gul. This early 20th century example is a product of the Yomud, a large, geographically scattered tribe in west Turkestan that utilize a variety of gul medallions in their weavings. This rug has an overall pattern of Dyrnak gul medallions. These are shaped like diamonds, and are made up of latch-hooks. 5' 9" x 4' 0"
